Light The Night, a walk that benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, is Thursday at Werner Park.
The 1-mile walk raises money for blood cancer research, community outreach and education programs. And, “It raises awareness that we're here,” said Hana Norval, the campaign manager for the event.
The event is free, though donations are encouraged.
Organizers expect 1,200 people to participate. Each walker will carry a balloon as they loop the concourse around Werner Park in Papillion three times. Red balloons are available for participants, white for survivors and gold for those who are walking in remembrance of a loved one they have lost. The walk begins at dusk, around 7:30 p.m.
There will also be a magician, face painting and bounce houses for kids as well as a band, prizes and games from Dave & Buster's. Food from Noodles & Company and Buffalo Wild Wings will be available for free to those who have raised or donated at least $100.
Norval said there will also be a remembrance event at a tent, separate from the other activities, for those who wish to grieve in a “safe area” with other people who understand what they have been through.
Registration opens at 5:30 p.m. at Werner Park.
“It's going to be a fun day and hopefully we'll see lots of people out there,” Norval said.
