Husker lineman Spencer Long out for the season

LINCOLN – Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said offensive guard Spencer Long is set for surgery on Thursday, but added that the left knee injury that Long suffered at Purdue isn't as bad as the Huskers had feared.

The second-team All-American, a fifth-year senior, went down during NU's first offensive series Saturday.

“Fortunately for him, we don't think it was as bad as obviously it could have been,” Pelini said Tuesday on the Big Ten teleconference. “It looks like he'll be out for the year, but the prognosis going forward's a little bit better.”

Pelini didn't speak specifically about the injury to Long, who made his 33rd career start at Purdue.

Mike Moudy replaced Long on Saturday and finished the game at right guard. Jake Cotton is the Huskers' starter at left guard.

Ryne Reeves and Givens Price now become important backups at guard, and Pelini said junior-college transfer Chongo Kondolo also will be evaluated despite not playing yet this season.

“We'll see how this week goes and see who steps up,” Pelini said. “We're looking at all our options, and our best options.”
