A handful of city parks and golf courses in Omaha are getting spruced up with new trees.
Mayor Jean Stothert and Parks Director Brook Bench will attend a ceremony Saturday afternoon at Lawrence Youngman Lake to mark a $50,000 donation of trees from Lanoha Nurseries.
The donation will provide 200 trees — including Norway and red maples and Honey Locust trees — that will be planted around the city. About 40 of them were to be planted Friday at the lake, located at 192nd Street and West Dodge Road. Other trees will be planted at Fontenelle, Whitehawk and Seymour Smith Parks and at Benson Golf Course and Johnny Goodman Golf Course.
Bench said in a statement that the trees will have a big impact on Omaha's newest lake and other popular outdoor destinations.
“Some of the trees donated have more than a five-inch caliper (and) are already 20 years old and 30 feet tall,” he said. “Trees this size would have taken years to grow, and we are truly grateful for the impact this donation will have on this park and others.”
