Dining Notes: Beer + bacon? 'nuff said

Beer is trendy. Bacon is trendy. Hence the first annual Beer and Bacon Festival, a new event in Omaha this summer.

A fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House and the Omaha Jaycees, the Beer and Bacon Festival will feature a beer tasting and a bacon-themed food competition on Aug. 3 at the Old Mattress Factory in north downtown.

Six food vendors will create their best bacon-themed dish and three celebrity judges will choose a winner. The event also will feature 10 local craft beers for tasting, and guests will be able to try the cooking from all six vendors. The Personics will play live music during the event.

Tickets are $30 and include a beer and bacon mug, the tastings, and the first beer. The event begins at 3 p.m. For more information, visit omahabeerandbacon.com.

Ballpark menu is fully loaded

The Levy Restaurant Group is cooking a slew of new menu items for baseball fans both on the concessions level and the suite level of TD Ameritrade Park during the College World Series.

Most of the items that will be for sale at the concessions stands seem suited for competitive eaters or, at the very least, very hungry fans.

Included are the ...

• Midwestern Monster, a double cheeseburger stuffed with pulled pork, ancho boursin cheese spread, sriracha mayo and onions;

• Cheesy Hot Dog Smasher, a twist on a grilled cheese prepared on toasted Belgian panini and stuffed with sharp cheddar, swiss, and jumbo hot dogs;

• Ribs and Tots, sweet potato tater tots topped with ancho braised short ribs smothered with gravy and topped with crispy onions; and

• The craziest item of all, the Triple Play, a three-layer stack of grilled parmesan dough with a bottom layer that is a bratwurst melt with Thousand Island dressing, a center layer of cheese curds, ancho short ribs and pimento sour cream and a top layer of sweet potato tots and onions with a crusted parmesan topping. The whole thing is drizzled in gravy.

Fans who have a seat on the suite level will enjoy an Omaha Steaks pan-roasted and butter-basted pork chop sandwich, a Stoysich House sausage sampler and a charred-and-chilled salmon sandwich served with a summer bean and snap pea salad, among other items.

I'll try some of the new menu items at the stadium and report back next week.

Hilton's patio has specials

The downtown Hilton Omaha hotel, meanwhile, will have a number of $8 specials on its patio during the series, including pork sliders, smoked chicken tacos and braised short rib sandwiches. The restaurant also will have $4 drink specials.

The covered patio is on the north side of the Hilton.

Pauli's pitches for tailgaters

Pauli's is trying to re-establish itself as the place to be during the CWS.

The bar has partnered with Twin Peaks Restaurant on the River City Star at 151 Freedom Park Road, just five blocks from the stadium.

Pauli's in the Outfield will have live music every night during the series and during the day is aiming for a family-friendly atmosphere. There will be an onsite bar and food from the Twin Peaks menu. The bar also will have parking for more than 1,000 vehicles and will provide transportation to and from the park. Tailgaters will be able to hang out in the lot with an open container.

The downtown venue is open now. Events continue through June 22.

Dry-aged steaks at Sullivan's

If you're still looking for a place to take your dad for Father's Day, Sullivan's Steakhouse is offering a meal featuring two dry-aged steaks and the chance for dads to win a prize.

The restaurant will serve a 26-ounce Tomahawk Steak and a 14-ounce New York Strip, both dry-aged. Dads also can enter to win a new golf bag as part of a special Father's Day raffle. Sullivan's is at 222 S. 15th St. For more information, call 402-342-0077.

Cascabel Ribeye in Midtown

Cantina Laredo also will celebrate Dad on Sunday with red meat.

The restaurant, in Midtown Crossing, will be serving a 16-ounce cowboy cut Cascabel Ribeye steak based with chile pepper marinade. The steak is $19.99 all day Sunday. For more information, call 402-345-6000.

Vine and Branch opens

Vine and Branch is open in the Old Market. The store, at 1125 Jackson St., sells high-end oils and vinegars.

Hours are Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Brix hosts Scotch tasting

Brix is playing host to its “Single Malt Saturday” this weekend from noon to 2 p.m. The events will take place at both locations of Brix, in Midtown Crossing and Village Pointe, and will feature tastings of a dozen single malt Scotch whiskeys.

Admission is $10, and all the proceeds will benefit the Ronald McDonald House.
