Kansas State's baseball team on Sunday added another important first to its 2013 season.

The NCAA awarded Kansas State one of the 16 regional sites for its tournament that will begin this week. Three other teams will join the Wildcats for the Manhattan, Kan., Regional at Tointon Family Stadium.

This will be the first time Kansas State (41-17) has hosted a regional, and Sunday's announcement came a little more than a week after the Wildcats won their first Big 12 regular-season championship. It was the first conference title in 80 years for Kansas State.

“I am very proud of this team and what they have accomplished this year,” Kansas State coach Brad Hill said. “I am extremely happy that we are able to bring a NCAA regional to the K-State and Manhattan communities. We have worked extremely hard to have the opportunity.”

Two other schools — Big Ten champion Indiana (43-14) and Virginia Tech (38-20) — also learned Sunday they will serve as regional hosts for the first time. The four-team regionals begin Friday and will conclude either Sunday or Monday.

Regional winners advance to super regional play, with those champions advancing to the June 15-26 College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

The 16 teams selected Sunday are assured of spots in the 64-team field. The rest of the field, in addition to seedings and pairings, will be announced Monday at 11 a.m. on ESPNU.

The other schools picked as regional hosts were Louisiana State (52-9), North Carolina (52-8), Virginia (47-10), Oregon State (45-10), South Carolina (39-18), Oregon (45-14), Cal State Fullerton (48-8), UCLA (38-17), Louisville (46-10), Vanderbilt (51-9), North Carolina State (44-14), Mississippi State (43-17) and Florida State (44-15).

Florida State will serve as a regional host for the 30th time, while this will be the 21st time LSU has hosted. Both schools were regional hosts last season, as were North Carolina, North Carolina State, Oregon, South Carolina, UCLA and Virginia.
